World’s oldest woman: Emma Morano celebrates 117th birthday

Although she has outlived all her immediate family and doesn’t have any children of her own, Emma Morano’s birthday was definitely not a quiet affair. Well-wishers filled her two-room apartment on Tuesday to celebrate the 117th birthday of the only living person born in the 19th century.

It hasn’t been an easy century. Morano saw two world wars and lost her fiancé in one of them before being forced into an abusive relationship. Before her husband left her, their only child died at the age of 6 months.

Still, she’s going strong. Her doctor of over two decades is surprised at how healthy she is, especially considering her strict diet of two raw eggs per day. She celebrated her birthday by having cake with a bunch of reporters and receiving a plaque from the Guinness Book of World Records.
