Adventure skiers trace the surprising origins of downhill skiing

The history of skiing goes back millennia. Ancient skiing began in China around 600 BC, not as a recreational pastime but as a means of survival. By chiseling and molding wood, then covering it with a layer of fur, the first skiers gave themselves an advantage over faster deer and elk on the snowy slopes of Central Asia.

Today, China is attempting to rekindle its skiing roots as Beijing prepares to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
